About us
Here at Forest Life we live and breathe terrariums. Our main focus is to provide living art for the home or office space by mixing unique glass vessels with the plant world. Our other focuses lie in sustainability by providing closed terrarium ecosystems that are self-sustaining. With these goals and values in mind, we are able to create beautiful living art pieces for people to enjoy. We always strive to innovate with new glass vessel shapes we source ourselves, keeping our product unique and ever-changing. This is also true with our plant collections, as we strive to push the boundary on species never imagined in the terrarium world. We look forward to growing our range and reaching across Australia over the coming months.
The Forest Life Team
Terrariums need to be positioned correctly for indirect sunlight. In these ideal conditions, they will then convert the light energy to thrive and grow in their own self-sustainable, living ecosystem. This process is known as photosynthesis: the plants will produce glucose and oxygen to be used for respiration to give the plant cells the energy they need to live.
Terrariums can live for a very long time. As a result of respiration, water vapor and carbon dioxide are released from the plants, and these can be used during photosynthesis. The terrarium’s own rainwater system cycles back through the soil for the ecosystem to survive, and this begins the process again.
What is a Terrarium?
A terrarium is an enclosed, transparent environment with a collection of small plants that illustrates on a small scale how our natural environment’s ecosystem works. It acts like a mini rainforest, working on the principles of condensation, evaporation, and precipitation. This demonstrates how the water cycle works, passing from liquid to gas, and back to liquid again. So, the soil in a terrarium needs to be carefully balanced to ensure the water cycle stays active. It’s a self-perpetuating micro-climate in action.
To maximise the sustainability of our terrariums, we have made our very own soil mixtures,
guaranteeing a long-term creation that will last. These soil recipes consist of balanced ingredients that have been tested and researched for many years, allowing us to adjust pH levels as required. As specialist terrarium makers, we ensure our soil has the best nutrient levels for enclosed terrarium ecosystems.
Terrariums can bring all kinds of life. A variety of insects can live inside the micro-ecosystem, and will live their natural life cycle.
Terrariums are a great way to garden indoors, especially if you live a busy lifestyle or you are away often. Being low maintenance and clean, a terrarium adds a beautiful living design element to any room that has natural, indirect sunlight.
